CEO's can be amazingly dumb when it comes to how people socialize! This post at Snarkaholic is a tiny analysis on the whole "why did Friendster fail?" thing that's surfaced again in among social software CEO's. My theory: Friendster was not only slow to pick up on features that were already used by successful adult oriented social software packages, but also that it neglected to factor in that some people in the generation now known as Gen Y have a very different view of adult entertainment from us old fogeys (yes, Gen X and B.Boomers!) and like to engage in erotic free expression. MySpace.com allows for erotic free expression and a sense of safety from people they would consider old-freak-preditors...although I would venture to assume there are preditors within their own ranks, too.
Friendster didn't put up with it--wrong move, obviously.
All this is beginning to sound like the grown-up teenagers of the 50's who thought they were so wild, looking at the hippies of the '60's and being utterly shocked.
and I'm just sitting here watching the world go by and laffing my ass off at the myopia of CEOs. How come I could see this and they can't??
