"It was all great fun 'till Johnny lost an eye...."

Well, I'm glad that a brief sojourn in the world of Usenet newsgroups (specf. alt.gothic) and several years on the New York Times Film Forum helped me to develop an asbestos skin, as I have been seriously flamed over the past couple of days.

Check out how I am accused of being a Dworkinite and how I believe myself to be a "firey iconoclast" on Shamash says (not by Shamash, of course, who is quite a good moderator.)The flames are under "The Geek to God Syndrome."

Not to mention the drubbing I take on Hugo Schwyzer's blog (under the "More on Older Men...post of 5/18 and my comments on the top post on the page.) Hugo's a nice, struggling theologian. Earnest theologians always struggle with both fatih and sex, as the two are strangely linked in the human psyche, and how to engage in both in an ethical manner is a great task.

But he's got a small difficulty understanding the difference between proselytizing and having dialog with a person of another faith.

And he could stand to take a pointer or two from Shamash on being a good moderator.

Being part of the drubbing/dialog on Hugo's blog has caused me to re-consider getting a ph.d. in theology. I've lived such a strange and interesting life, and miss the dialogue I've had with theologians of every stripe...not to mention that I feel like I'd like to share more of my hard-earned wisdom with others.

But, for the moment, I'm being highly amused by the flame fest resulting from simply stating that not all women are empowered by sex work and that attraction between men and women has a biological component and isn't totally a societal construct. :-)

I didn't read the comments on the first post before, but did now. Ha! I could make some less than flattering remarks about Dworkin, but shall abstain as it's not the point.

So, tell me, is there a school of thought that says all s*ex workers are empowered? Because, as you mentioned, women in impoverished countries often have little choice in the matter, to the point where some are indeed kidnapped. (Or hired to do other work and abused by their employers.) But at the same time, I have known women who go into various facets of sex work (dancing, phone, etc), who know what they're getting into, and keep a strong sense of themselves. But the ones who truly do are rare in this society.

lol! Gad, Ed. that's a riot...and I think Soli can relate to that one with something that happened over at one of the blogs she moderates.

And, to address what Soli commented on, it really is some quirky feminist philosophy that allows for any level of prostitution to be "empowering, including poor widows in India who are force into it because there is no other employment for them...often these are women who would *never* think of sleeping with *anyone* other than their husband and, then, because of a tragic circumstance, have to live what they believed to be an amoral lifestyle. And a dangerous one, too...as condoms are not often used in their transactions.

But it seems that saying that, and other things, makes me the Nazi. I don't know...maybe they've seen the pic and it has something to do with the hat ;-)
