Silly Search Criteria Leads to Bigger Hits

The combination of keyword search and non-specific blog content can yield some interesting results....

Sunday was a 100-plus hit day for this blog (notice that I didn't say "readers"--I said "hits." Contrary to popular belief, these are two different things) When I checked on how all those folks got to my blog, I found a common search criteria: sexy turkey recipe.

So, I looked into the entry page for that particular search criteria...

Apparenly, those search words threw Google's poor little bots into a bit of a tizzy and the search results ended up dumpin everyone on a page from my blog from around last Thanksgiving when I wrote about recipes for leftover turkey. (and I found it even goofier that people would be looking up that kind of a term. what's on *their* minds??)

Other blogospheric statwatchers--most notably Jeff at Have Coffee Will Write, Terry at I See Invisible People and Grace D. at State of Grace--have noticed funky search criteria unrelated to anything in their regular content accounts for some part of their daily hits...and that's probably the case for most independent bloggers...

Now, there are two ways to look at this: one is to get really pissed that someone who's looking for porn of some sort has stumbled upon your innocuous and un-pornographic blog entries. The other ways is to just think: hey, at least I'm getting hits.

Because, deep down, you never know what people are going to take a minute to read--even when they're searching for porn. We who are writing can never really know the minds of every single person who's searching. I know that I don't necessarily write this blog wtih the grand intention of coming up #1 in Google's search results for any particular subject. Yet, oddly, we might even gain a regular reader or two from someone who got thrown off their porn search by something really cool that we've written. Our blogging might just hit their "I didn't know that!" button and they might come back.

I know that "sexy turkey recipe" didn't get anyone a sexy turkey recipe--but it did lead them to some great stuff to do with the leftovers! Thanks Google :-)
